Renovation of the secondary academic school in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria

Direct commission

The secondary academic school in Bruck an der Leitha was showing clear signs of age: the old windows were defective, the heating did not work properly, and the entire complex looked grey and run-down. In short: the school was in urgent need of an upgrade.

We wanted to add some colour to everyday school life!

An ensemble of individuals

We designed a small extension to house the creative classes, reorganised the entrances and the schoolyards, and designed the outdoor space using bench seats, play areas and plenty of greenery.

We decided on green and yellow, warm colours found in nature.

In our colour concept each building was given its own palette. Where two buildings ‘meet’ the shades of one are mingled with those of the other in order to clearly identify the individual buildings as independent elements, while at the same time giving the ensemble a common identity.

To achieve this aim, we used 50x50cm aluminium panels for the facades to allow the colours to be graduated in a way that conveys a softer overall impression.

Continuing the game

Shortly before completing the thermal upgrade we were also commissioned to adapt the sports halls. There, quite literally, we continued to play with our colour concept: each of the three sports halls was given a different colour: yellow, blue, green. This simplifies communication between students and teachers and establishes identification with the place.

Today we have P.E. in green!

We used sports field markings to break up the corridors that lead to the changing rooms. While making their way to sports class the kids are already part of the game.

We are particularly proud of the fact that in the end the school even incorporated our colour concept in the design of its logo.
