The house in the meadow
Holiday house in Zellerndorf, Lower Austria
The weekend house for a family of four is located 70 km to the north of Vienna. This means it can be reached from the city in just an hour, but is still far enough away to allow the residents to leave the stresses of daily life in Vienna behind them.
Embedded in the structure of a traditional wine-growing village, the site enjoys a fantastic view of the vineyards and the village church.
Three feelers reach for the greenery.
Built in the shape of a ‘Y’, the house seems to extend three ‘feelers’ into the surroundings, each of them ending in a loggia that enables the building to capture the landscape.
Like the traditional wooden barns in the surroundings, the solid areas of the outside walls are clad with rough-sawn larch boards. The meadow in the garden is mowed twice each year.
Following the path of the sun
Inside the house the functions of sleeping, eating and living are laid out to follow the path of the sun as it moves from the east, where the residents awaken in the morning, to the northwest, where they can watch the sunset from a loggia.
A large freestanding unit that accommodates the bathroom and WC articulates the interior. The kitchen, which is also integrated in this unit, forms the centre, while an open fireplace ensures cosiness in winter.
